Memories of Christmas and The Family Music Celebration

Each Christmas brings back a flood of memories of many of the holidays during my childhood. The one thing that I miss the most is the family music that was always made and played at my great aunt and uncle’s house. Coming from an extremely musical family it only made sense to celebrate with music. Just about everyone played at least one musical instrument and if they didn’t they surely had a great singing voice. If by chance you couldn’t do either you were kept busy in the kitchen and the dining room making sure that there was a steady flow of food and drink ready during the entire celebration. Since I can’t play any instrument or carry a tune, I can only thank goodness I was a kid and didn’t have to partake in that. I was too busy running around the house, the yard and digging the music being played in the living room.

Uncle Earl was my favorite (for a variety of reasons) I can still see him playing one of his many beautiful gently used saxophones that he was so proud of. I could never understand how a person could play one of these saxophones. It requires so much breath, surely one could possibly pass out from the lack of oxygen being passed through the body. Actually most of the windwind and basswind instruments require such a talent, a talent that just leaves this person breathless.
